Canadian Tamil Congress observes National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and donates $20,000 to Downie & Wenjack Fund as a first of many steps towards education, awareness, and reconciliation.
September 30, 2021 – Toronto, CA – The Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) joins Canadians in observing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, honouring lost children and Survivors of residential schools, their families and communities. September 30th is a day for solemn reflection of the systemic oppression, inequalities, and discrimination that Indigenous Peoples have endured and the pain and injustices they continue to bear today.
The 13th Annual Tamil Canadian Walk was successfully hosted at Thomson Memorial Park in Scarborough, raising $20,000 in donations. Proceeds from this year’s walk are supporting the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund (DWF). DWF is encouraging the journey toward reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, providing access to education on the true history of Indigenous Peoples and the true history and ongoing impact of residential schools.
To mark the inaugural National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, representatives from CTC will present the cheque of $20 000 raised from the walk-a-thon to DWF, on location on the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory.
“Through ongoing partnership with DWF, CTC is committed to educating Tamil Canadian settlers to recognize and acknowledge the dark, dreadful history Canada was built on, and learn about the sustained struggles and injustices experienced by the Indigenous Peoples of this land” said Sivan Ilangko, President of CTC.
The Six Nations of the Grand River Territory unifies all Haudenosaunee peoples under the Great Tree of Peace. It is currently the only First Nation community that includes all six Haudenosaunee Nations. Located along the banks of the Grand River, the Six Nations of the Grand River is the most populous First Nation in Canada.
CTC strongly urges Tamil Canadians to identify the collective responsibility to increase our awareness of Canada’s history and peoples and take tangible action in partnership with Indigenous communities towards reconciliation.
