3rd annual Tree Planting Campaign organized by Canadian Tamil Congress and Center for Leadership and Innovation
On Sunday October 13, 2013 Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) and Centre for Leadership and Innovation (CFLI) joined hands to plant more than 320 trees in the Bob Hunter Memorial Park in Markham. Rouge Park provided logistical support and also shared their extensive knowledge of the park and the benefits of the reforesting.
Despite the weather, many Tamil Canadians from all ages contributed to the future of Rouge National Park by planting nearly 300 trees. The large turnouts for Sunday’s event proved Tamil Community’s commitment to protecting and conserving the environment for the future generations to come.
The event started off with Ms. Sheryl Santos, Stewardship Coordinator of Rouge Park welcoming the volunteers and introducing the remaining speakers. Then, Mr. Louis Lavoie of Parks Canada addressed the crowd followed by the Manager of Rouge National Park. Ms. Pruntha Kanagasundaram from the CFLI’s Youth Leadership Program (YLP) also spoke. Tree Planting Campaign coordinator, Ms. Prayalini Sathanantham thanked everyone in attendance on behalf of Canadian Tamil Congress. For the third straight year Ms. Rathika Sitsabaiesan MP for Scarborough-Rouge River participated in this event.
Both the Manger of Rouge Park & the representative form Parks Canada, also talked about the importance of reforesting and preserving the Canadian Natural heritage and the importance of youth involvement. After the Rouge Park team members demonstrated the proper ways to plant each type of trees, all volunteers started their planting.
