15th Annual Tamil Canadian Walk in support of Upcountry Tamil’s Education Needs
Several hundreds including the Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow participated at the 15th Annual Tamil Canadian Walk held on Sunday September 10th 2023 at the Thomson Memorial Park in Scarborough. Tamil Canadian Walk is hosted by the Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) and this year’s walk supported the building of a science lab in the Dehiowita Tamil Mahavidyalayam (school) in the Kegalle district in Sri Lanka, which was severely impacted by landslides.
The upcountry Tamils or Malaiyaha Tamils are the worst neglected community in Sri Lanka. This year marks the 200 years of Tamils from India being brought to Sri Lanka by the British as laboures in the Tea estates and CTC decided to invest on Upcountry Tamil’s most important need, which is Education.
The fund raising target for this campaign is $100,000 and a little over $65,000 has been raised at the walk-a-thon. Thus the fundraising effort will continue until the target is achieved. We thank all our generous donors for this year’s walk-a-thon who have helped us achieve the 65% of the fundraising target.
We take this opportunity to request all those who have not supported this very important cause to do so at the earliest.
