18th Annual Canadian Tamil Congress Thai Pongal and Tamil Heritage Month Celebration

The Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) proudly hosted the 18th Annual Thai Pongal and Tamil Heritage Month celebration on January 18, 2025, at the Centennial College Events Centre in Toronto. This highly anticipated event brought together Tamil community members and local leaders to celebrate the harvest festival of Pongal and honor the rich Tamil heritage.

The evening commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, a symbolic gesture invoking prosperity and unity. This was followed by the land acknowledgment, the Canadian national anthem, the Tamil Thai Vazhthu and welcome dance.
The CTC President Kumar Ratnam addressed the gathering with an inspiring speech reflecting on more than two decades of CTC’s impactful work. Highlighting key achievements in areas such as advocacy, community development, and cultural preservation, the President also outlined ambitious future goals, reaffirming the organization’s commitment to uplifting the Tamil community. As part of the program, a special presentation titled “CTC Rewind 2024” offered a comprehensive recap of the organization’s initiatives from the past year, showcasing its efforts in Canada and Sri Lanka.

The event featured greetings from a host of distinguished dignitaries, including Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti, Pickering Mayor Mayor Kevin Ashe, Toronto Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie and Toronto Councillor Jamal Myers, each commending the Canadian Tamil Congress for its contributions to Canada’s multicultural fabric. Honorable Bill Blair, Minister of National Defence, and MP Shaun Chen were unable to attend, they conveyed their heartfelt greetings through messages. Deputy Provost of York University’s Markham Campus Dan Palermo and University of Toronto Scarborough’s Principal Linda Johnston also spoke at the event. Sri Lanka Muslim Expatriate Council (SLMEC) representative shared a heartfelt Thai Pongal message, underscoring the shared values of unity and gratitude.

In highlighting and praising the Canadian Tamil Congress’s (CTC) accomplishments over the past 24 years, including successfully hosting the largest Tamil Fest for many years, Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti encouraged the community to move beyond minor disagreements and work towards a brighter future for all. He remarked, “I was advised not to attend Tamil Fest last year. However, I went because you don’t run away from friends during challenging times; in fact, you run towards them to provide help where needed—and that’s what I did.” Mayor Scarpitti further emphasized, “CTC’s past accomplishments are a testament to its unwavering commitment to serving Tamils around the world.”

A central highlight of the evening was the presentation of awards recognizing individuals whose contributions have profoundly impacted the Tamil community. The Service Excellence Award 2025 was conferred upon Mr. Velupillai Thangavelu, whose extraordinary journey and commitment to advocacy, intellectual pursuits, and Tamil nationalism have left an indelible mark. Over decades, he has been an influential trade union activist, writer, and community leader, passionately advocating for Tamil rights and social justice.

The Leaders for Change Award 2025 was presented to Dr. Soma Ilangovan, a trailblazer in Tamil cultural advocacy and humanitarian efforts. Dr Ilangovan is a relentless advocate for Tamil rights, he founded the USA Committee to Stop Genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka and worked globally to raise awareness about Tamil issues. He is the founder of Periyar International Inc. and a former President of Federation of Tamil Sangam’s of North America (FETNA). Dr. Ilangovan’s many decades-long efforts to preserve Tamil heritage, coupled with his progressive vision, make him a deserving recipient of this prestigious honor.

A vibrant program added richness to the evening, with the highlight being the Made in Mullaitivu Fashion Show, which featured elegant handloom sarees crafted by women affected by war in the Northern and Eastern Provinces of Sri Lanka. This initiative, launched by CTC in 2020, has empowered women by providing training and sustainable financial opportunities. CTC’s Humanitarian Projects Coordinator for Sri Lanka, Thushyanthan R. Thurairatnam, detailed the organization’s ongoing projects in Sri Lanka in association with the North and East Economic Development (NEED) Centre, including the Canada-Batticaloa Friendship Farm project, Dehiowita Tamil Mahavidyalayam Laboratory Building, Mullai Handlooms Centre and the Made in Mullaitivu showroom initiative, which supports local producers and products.

This celebration not only honored Tamil heritage and culture but also highlighted the resilience and unity of the Tamil community in Canada and beyond. The Canadian Tamil Congress looks forward to continuing this cherished tradition in the years to come.

கனடிய தமிழர் பேரவை (CTC) பெருமையுடன் நடத்திவரும் வருடாந்த பொங்கல் மற்றும் மரபுத்திங்கள் நிகழ்வு இந்த ஆண்டு 18 ஆவது முறையாக ஜனவரி 18, 2025 அன்று, டொரோண்டோவிலுள்ள சென்டினியல் கல்லூரி நிகழ்வுகள் மையத்தில் சிறப்பாக நடைபெற்றது. தமிழ் சமூகத்தினர், உள்ளூர் தலைவர்கள் மற்றும் கலை இலக்கிய ஆர்வலர்கள் ஒன்றுகூடிய இந்த நிகழ்வு பொங்கல் பண்டிகையின் மகிழ்ச்சியையும், தமிழர் மரபின் செறிவையும் கொண்டாடும் சிறப்புவாய்ந்த நிகழ்வாக அமைந்திருந்தது.
இந் நிகழ்ச்சி மங்கள விளக்கேற்றலுடன் ஆரம்பமாகி அதனைத்தொடர்ந்து கனடிய தேசிய கீதமும், தமிழ் தாய் வாழ்த்தும், வரவேற்பு நடனமும் நிகழ்த்தப்பட்டன.

CTC தலைவர் குமார் ரத்னம் தமது உரையில் 20 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு மேலான CTC-யின் சாதனைகளைப் பற்றிய விபரங்களையும், சமூக முன்னேற்றத்திற்கான திட்டங்களையும், கனடிய தமிழர் பேரவையின் எதிர்கால நோக்கங்களையும் செயற்பாடுகளையும் எடுத்துரைத்தார். நிகழ்ச்சியின் முக்கிய அம்சமாக, “CTC Rewind 2024” என்ற என்ற தொனிப்பொருளில் கடந்த 2024ஆம் ஆண்டின் சாதனைகளையும், கனடா மற்றும் இலங்கையில் மேற்கொண்ட முயற்சிகளையும் பிரதிபலிக்கும் காணொளி ஒன்றும் ஒளிபரப்பப்பட்டது.

நிகழ்ச்சியின் முக்கிய அம்சமாக சிறந்த சேவையாளர் விருது (Service of Excellence) 2025 திரு. வேலுப்பிள்ளை தங்கவேலு அவர்களுக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டது. இவர் தொழிற்சங்கச் செயலாளராகவும், அரசாங்க எழுத்து விஞ்ஞானர் சங்கத்தின் (AES) நிறுவனர் உறுப்பினராகவும், தமிழ் உழவர்கள் உரிமைகளை முன்னேற்றிய சிறந்த வழிகாட்டியாகவும் விளங்குவதோடு தமிழ் உலக இயக்கம், கனடிய தமிழ் சங்கங்கள் கூட்டமைப்பு போன்ற அமைப்புகளில் முக்கியப் பொறுப்புகளை வகித்து, சமூக வளர்ச்சியில் குறிப்பிடத்தக்க பங்காற்றியுள்ளார். மேலும், தமிழ் மற்றும் ஆங்கிலத்தில் 2,000-க்கும் மேற்பட்ட கட்டுரைகளை எழுதிய இவரது பங்களிப்பு, தமிழ் சமூகத்தின் அறிவு வளர்ச்சியில் பெரும் தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளது. அவரது மாறுபட்ட சிந்தனைக்கு ஆதாரமாக, “சோதிடப் புறத்து” எனும் அவரது புத்தகம் காணப்படுகிறது. இன்றளவும் தமிழ்ச் சிநேகித எழுத்தாளர் சங்கத்தின் தலைவராக, தமிழ் சமூகத்தில் படைப்பாற்றல் மற்றும் அறிவு வளர்ச்சியை ஊக்குவித்துவருகின்றார் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

அதேபோல், மாற்றத்திற்கான தலைவர்கள் விருது (Change for Leadership) 2025, தமிழர் உரிமைகளுக்காக பிரச்சாரங்களிலும், பாரம்பரியத்தை பாதுகாப்பதில் முனைப்பும் காட்டிய டாக்டர். சோம இலங்கோவன் அவர்களுக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டது. இவர் பெரியார் கருத்தியல் மற்றும் தமிழ் இலக்கியத்தின் மீது கொண்ட ஆழ்ந்த ஆர்வத்தால், 30 ஆண்டுகளுக்கும் மேலாக தமிழ் கலாச்சார மற்றும் சமூக அமைப்புகளில் முக்கிய பங்களிப்பைச் செய்துவருகின்றார். சிக்காகோ தமிழ் சங்கம், வட அமெரிக்க தமிழ் சங்கங்கள் கூட்டமைப்பு போன்ற அமைப்புகளில் தலைமை வகித்து வருவதோடு தமிழ் பள்ளிகள், கலாச்சார நிகழ்வுகள், மனிதாபிமான முயற்சிகள் மூலம் தமிழ் மரபை காக்க பல வகையிலும் செயட்பட்டுவரும் ஒருவராவார். 1984 ஆம் ஆண்டில் இலங்கையில் தமிழ் இனப்படுகொலைக்கு எதிரான USA குழுமத்தை நிறுவி, உலகளவில் தமிழர் உரிமைகளைப் பிரச்சாரம் செய்துவந்துள்ளார் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. அதுமட்டுமல்லாது பெரியார் கருத்தியல் மற்றும் மனிதநேயத்தை முன்வைத்து சர்வதேச மாநாடுகள் பலவற்றையும் இவர் தலைமைதாங்கி நடத்திவந்துள்ளார்.

நிகழ்ச்சியை மேலும் சிறப்பிக்கும் விதமாக, Made in Mullaitivu Fashion Show நடத்தப்பட்டது. வடக்கு மற்றும் கிழக்கு இலங்கையின் போரினால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட பெண்களால் தயாரிக்கப்பட்ட தனித்துவமான கைத்தறி புடவைகளின் காட்சிப்படுத்தலாக இது அமைந்திருந்தது. 2020 ஆம் ஆண்டு வடக்கு மற்றும் கிழங்கு மாகாணங்களில் உள்ள பாதிக்கப்பட்ட வறிய குடும்பங்களைச் சேர்ந்த பெண்களின் வாழ்வியலை முன்னேற்றவும் அவர்களுக்கான நீண்டகால பொருளாதார வளர்ச்சியை தக்கவைத்துக்கொள்ளவும் இந்த திட்டம் கனடிய தமிழர் பேரவையால் ஆரம்பிக்கப்பட்டிருந்தது. இதனைத்தொடர்ந்து CTC-யின் மனிதாபிமான திட்ட ஒருங்கிணைப்பாளர் துஷ்யாந்தன் ஆர். துரைரத்தினம் தலைமையில், NEED மையத்துடன் இணைந்து CTCயால் செயல்படுத்தப்படும் கனடா-மட்டக்களப்பு நட்புரவுப்பண்ணைத் திட்டம், முல்லை கைத்தறி நிலையம் உள்ளிட்ட பல திட்டங்கள் குறித்து அவர் விளக்கமளித்திருந்தார். இவை இலங்கையின் தமிழ் பிரதேசங்களில் உள்ள உள்ளூர் உற்பத்தியாளர்களையும் உற்பத்தியையும் சர்வதேச சந்தையில் முன்னிலைப்படுத்தும் திட்டமிடல்கள் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

இந்நிகழ்வு தமிழர் பாரம்பரியத்தின் பெருமையையும், கனடிய தமிழ் சமூகத்தின் ஒற்றுமையும் பிரதிபலிக்கும் ஒரு நிகழ்வாக அமைந்திருந்தது.
