A Bridge to Hope: Supporting Thenamaravadi Farmers

In 1984, the people of Thenamaravadi were forced to displace and were only allowed to return to their village in 2010. However, accessing their Akkaraiveli farmland—located under the Kokku Thoduvai divisional administration in Mullaitivu District—remained a challenge due to the lack of proper transport infrastructure.

Despite these hardships, young farmers took the initiative in 2020 to cultivate this abandoned farmland. However, with no proper road or bridge, their efforts were often hindered. Last year, heavy rains and floods severely damaged the Vilathiyal Irakkam bridge and a section of the newly built 3 km road, making access to farmland even more difficult just as the harvest season was approaching.

The farmers sought CTC’s support for the bridge reconstruction. Understanding the urgency of this situation, the Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) stepped in with some financial support for the reconstruction of the Vilathiyal Irakkam bridge, ensuring that the farmers could reach their lands without further obstacles. The temporary reconstruction of the bridge has now been completed, and farmers are using it without any hindrance. However, a permanent bridge remains the long-term solution, and efforts must be undertaken to achieve this.

February 25th, CTC’s executive director, members and donors of this project visited the completed bridge, met with the farmers, and witnessed firsthand the impact of this crucial initiative.

This bridge is more than just a structure—it is a symbol of resilience, community support, and a lifeline for the farmers of Thenamaravadi. We are proud to have played a role in this project and remain committed to uplifting our community.

தென்னமரவடி விவசாயிகளுக்கான ஒரு நம்பிக்கையின் பாலம்

1984ஆம் ஆண்டு தென்னமரவடி மக்கள் வலுக்கட்டாயமாக தமது கிராமத்தில் இருந்து வெளியேற்றப்பட்டனர். 2010ஆம் ஆண்டில் அவர்கள் மீளக் குடியேறினார்கள். இருப்பினும், முல்லைத்தீவு மாவட்டத்திற்குட்பட்ட கொக்கு தொடுவாய் கமநல சேவை நிலையத்திற்கு உட்பட்ட அக்கரை வெளி வயல் வெளிக்கு போக்குவரத்து வசதி இல்லாததால், விவசாய நடவடிக்கைகள் மேற்கொள்ளமுடியாத நிலை ஏற்பட்டது.

இந்த சூழ்நிலையில், 2020ஆம் ஆண்டு முதல் தென்னமரவடி கிராமத்தின் இளைய விவசாயிகள் தமது முயற்சியால் வயல் வெளியை மீண்டும் சாகுபடி செய்யத் தொடங்கினர். இருப்பினும், இதற்கான முறையான சாலையோ அல்லது பாலமோ இல்லாததால், விவசாயம் தொடர்ந்து செய்ய பெரும் சிரமம் ஏற்பட்டது. வீதி அபிவிருத்தி அதிகார சபையின் ஊடாக 3 கிலோமீட்டர் நீளமான புதிய பாதை அமைக்கப்பட்டாலும், கடந்த வருடம் ஏற்பட்ட அடை மழை மற்றும் வெள்ளத்தினால் வீதியின் ஒரு பகுதியும், விளாத்தியழ இறக்க பாலமும் முற்றாக சேதமடைந்தன. அறுவடை தொடங்கியுள்ள இந்த சமயத்தில், விவசாயிகள் பெரும் அவதியடைந்தனர்.

தென்னைமரவடி கிராம கமநல அமைப்பினால் கனடிய தமிழர் பேரவையிடம் இந்த பாலத்தின் புனர் நிர்மாணத்திற்கு உதவி கோரப்பட்டிருந்தது. இந்த கடுமையான சூழ்நிலையை கருத்தில் கொண்டு CTC விளாத்தியழ இறக்க பாலத்திற்கான புனரமைப்பு பணிகளுக்கு நிதி உதவி வழங்கி விவசாயிகளுக்கு தமது வயல் வெளிகளுக்கு தடையின்றி சென்று வர உதவியது. தற்போது பாலத்தின் புனரமைப்பு தற்காலிகமாக முடிவடைந்து, விவசாயிகள் தடைகள் இன்றி இந்த பாலத்தை பயன்படுத்தி வருகின்றனர். இதற்கான நீண்டகால தீர்வு ஒரு நிரந்தரமான பாலம் ஒன்றை அமைப்பதாகும். அதற்கான முயற்சிகள் எடுக்கப்பட வேண்டி உள்ளது.

பெப்ரவரி 25ஆம் திகதி CTCயின் நிர்வாக இயக்குனர், உறுப்பினர் மற்றும் இந்த திட்டத்தின் நன்கொடையாளர்கள் புனரமைக்கப்பட்ட பாலத்தினை பார்வையிட்டனர். அங்கு விவசாயிகளை சந்தித்து, இந்த மிக முக்கியமான திட்டத்தின் பலன்களையும் நேரில் அறிந்துகொண்டனர்.

இந்தப் பாலம் வெறும் கட்டுமானம் அல்ல. இது தென்னமரவடி மக்களின் தடைகளை மீறிய உறுதியின் சின்னமாகவும், சமூக ஒத்துழைப்பின் அடையாளமாகவும் விளங்குகிறது. எமது சமூகத்தினை உயர்த்த உதவியதில் கனடிய தமிழர் பேரவை பெருமை அடைகின்றது. மேலும் இதுபோன்ற திட்டங்களில் நாங்கள் தொடர்ந்து உறுதியாகசெயற்படுவோம்.
