Canadian Tamil Congress observed National Day for Truth and Reconciliation at the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory

The Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) and members of the Tamil community joined the Indigenous community at the Six Nations of the Grand River on September 30^th 2021, to mark Canada’s first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day – a day for solemn reflection of the systemic oppression, inequalities, and discrimination that Indigenous Peoples have endured and the pain and injustices they continue to bear today.

After successfully hosting the 13^th Annual Tamil Canadian Walk, CTC was able to raise over $20,000 in donations. Proceeds from this year’s walk supported the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund (DWF). DWF is encouraging the journey toward reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, providing access to education on the true history of Indigenous Peoples and the true history and ongoing impact of residential schools. CTC Representatives presented the cheque of $20 000 raised from the walk-a-thon to DWF, on location on the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. Located along the banks of the Grand River, the Six Nations of the Grand River is the most populous First Nation in Canada.

Bob Watts, former interim Executive Director of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission received the cheque on behalf of DWF. “This is a real tangible example of truth and reconciliation. Happy that we formed this relationship with each other” said Mr. Watts.

The day included a visit to the community of Oshweken, Chiefswood National Historic Site, Gaylord Powless Arena, as well as Mohawk Institute (now known as Woodland Cultural Centre) – Canada’s First Residential School. The Mohawk Institute Indian Residential School operated in Brantford, Ontario from 1828 to 1970. It served as a boarding school for First Nations children from Six Nations, as well as other communities throughout Ontario and Quebec. It was a key tool in the effort to assimilate First Nations children into European Christian society, and sever the continuity of culture from parent to child. It now stands as a physical reminder of the legacy of injustices imposed upon Indigenous community in Canada.

 CTC strongly urges the Tamil community to identify the collective responsibility to increase our awareness of Canada’s history and peoples and take tangible action in partnership with Indigenous communities towards reconciliation.

“Six Nations of the Grand River” தேசத்தின் கிராண்ட் ஆற்றங்கரையில் உண்மை மற்றும் நல்லிணக்கத்திற்கான கனடிய தேசிய நாளைக் கனடியத் தமிழர் பேரவை கடைப்பிடித்தது!

கனடியத் தமிழர் பேரவை (CTC) மற்றும் தமிழ்ச் சமூகத்தின் உறுப்பினர்கள் செப்ரெம்பர் 30 ஆம் தேதி கனடாவின் உண்மை மற்றும் நல்லிணக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்துவதற்கான முதல் தேசிய நாளையும், செம்மஞ்சள் ஆடை நாளையும் முன்னிட்டு கிராண்ட் ஆற்றங்கரையில் பழங்குடிச் சமூகத்தோடு இணைந்திருந்தனர். கனடிய அரசுகளால் பழங்குடியின மக்கள் மீது தொடர்ச்சியாக மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்ட திட்டமிடப்பட்ட ஒடுக்குமுறைகள், ஏற்றத்தாழ்வுகள் மற்றும் பாகுபாடுகள் காரணமாக அந்த மக்கள் வலிகளையும், அநீதிகளையும் இன்றும் தாங்கி வருகின்றனர்.

பதின்மூன்றாவது வருடாந்த கனடியத் தமிழர் நிதிசேர் நடையை
நடத்திய கனடியத் தமிழர் பேரவை 20,000 க்கும்  மேற்பட்ட கனடிய டொலர்களைத் திரட்டியிருந்தது. இந்த ஆண்டுக்கான நிதிசேர் நடையில் சேகரிக்கப்பட்ட நிதி கோர்ட் டவுனி & சேனி வென்ஜாக் நிதியத்துக்கு (DWF) வழங்கப்படுகிறது. பழங்குடி மக்களுக்கும் அவர்கள் அல்லாத சமூகங்களுக்கும் இடையிலான நல்லிணக்கத்தை நோக்கிய பயணத்தை DWF நிதியம் ஊக்குவிக்கிறது. பூர்வகுடி மக்களின் உண்மையான வரலாற்றையும் மற்றும் வதிவிடப் பள்ளிகள் என்ற முறைமையினால் தற்போது எழுந்துள்ள தாக்கம் குறித்த கல்வியையும் கனடியர்கள் பெறுவதற்காக DWF நிதியம் உழைத்து வருகிறது. கனடியத் தமிழர் பேரவையின் பிரதிநிதிகள் கிராண்ட் ஆற்றங்கரையின் இருப்பிடமொன்றில் நிதிசேர் நடையிலிருந்து பெறப்பட்ட இருபதினாயிரம் கனடிய டொலர்களுக்கான காசோலையை வழங்கியிருந்தனர். கிராண்ட் ஆற்றங்கரையில் அமைந்துள்ள Six Nations of the Grand River பிராந்தியம் கனடாவில் அதிக தொகையில் பூர்வகுடி மக்கள் வாழும் பழங்குடித் தேசமாகும்.

கனடாவின் உண்மை மற்றும் நல்லிணக்க ஆணையத்தின் முன்னாள் இடைக்கால நிர்வாக இயக்கினரான “பொப் வாற்ஸ்”,  DWF நிதியம் சார்பாக காசோலையைப் பெற்றுக்கொண்டார். “இது உண்மை மற்றும் நல்லிணக்கம் உருவாக்கப்படுவதற்கான உண்மையான உறுதியான உதாரணம். நாங்கள் ஒருவருக்கொருவர் இந்த உறவுகளை உருவாக்கியதில் மகிழ்ச்சியடைகிறோம் ”என இறுதியுரையின் போது பொப் வாற்ஸ் கூறினார்.

இந்த நிகழ்வின் போது எமது உறுப்பினர்கள்  ஓஷ்வெக்கன் பிரதேசம், சீஃப்ஸ்வூட் தேசிய வரலாற்று அருங்காட்சியகம், கெய்லோர்ட் பவ்லெஸ் அரங்கம், மற்றும் கனடாவின் முதலாவது வதிவிடப் பாடசாலையான மொஹாக் கல்லூரி (தற்போது வூட்லான்ட் கலாச்சார மையம் என அழைக்கப்படுகிறது) ஆகியவற்றுக்கும் வருகை தந்திருந்தார்கள். கனடாவின் பழங்குடிச் சிறார்களுக்கான முதலாவது வதிவிடப் பாடசாலையான மொஹாக் கல்லூரி 1828 முதல் 1970 வரை ஒன்ராறியோ மாகாணத்தின் பிரான்ற்போர்ட்டில் இயங்கி வந்திருக்கின்றது. இது Six Nations பழங்குடிச் சமூகச்
சிறார்களுக்கான உறைவிடப் பள்ளியாகவும், ஒன்ராறியோ மற்றும் கியூபெக் முழுவதும் உள்ள மற்றைய பழங்குடிச் சமூகச் சிறார்களுக்காகவும் இயங்கி வந்துள்ளது. பூர்வகுடி மக்களின் குழந்தைகளை ஐரோப்பிய கிறிஸ்தவ சமுதாயத்தில் ஒருங்கிணைத்து, பழங்குடிப் பெற்றோரிடமிருந்து பழங்குடிக் குழந்தைகளுக்கு ஊட்டப்பட்டு வருகிற கலாச்சார பண்பாட்டுத்  தொடர்ச்சியை அழிக்கும் செயற்பாட்டில் இது ஒரு முக்கிய கருவியாகச் செயற்படுத்தப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. இந்த விடயம் தற்போது கனடாவில் பழங்குடி சமூகத்தின் மீது சுமத்தப்பட்ட அநீதிகளின் வரலாற்றை நினைவுபடுத்துவதாக உள்ளது.

கனடாவின் வரலாறு மற்றும் பூர்வகுடி மக்கள் குறித்த நமது விழிப்புணர்வை அதிகரிப்பதற்கான கூட்டுப்பொறுப்பை அடையாளம் காணவும், நல்லிணக்கத்தை நோக்கிய பாதையில் பழங்குடிச் சமூகங்களுடன் இணைந்து உறுதியான பயணத்தை முன்னெடுக்கவும் கனடியத் தமிழர் பேரவை கனடியத் தமிழ் சமூகத்தை  வலியுறுத்துகிறது.
