International Women’s Day Celebration

Celebrating Strength and Diversity: Reflecting on a Memorable International Women’s Day with the Canadian Tamil Congress On March 24th, 2024, the Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) had the honor of commemorating International Women’s Day, marking an event that celebrated the remarkable achievements and contributions of women within and beyond the Tamil community in Canada.

The event commenced with cultural significance, the Lighting of the Traditional Lamp symbolizing light, wisdom, and the dispelling of darkness. This was beautifully complemented by the singing of the Canadian National Anthem and the Thamil Thai Vazthu, celebrating our dual heritage and the harmonious blend of cultures.

The event was further enlivened by cultural dance performances that showcased the diverse talents within our community, echoing the themes of empowerment and celebration.

CTC President Raveena Rajasingham, in her speech emphasized the organization’s commitment to advancing gender equality and supporting women’s leadership across various sectors. The speech set the tone for an inspiring lineup of guest speakers: Pinki Gosal founder of Vasanti Cosmetics, Nindu Kumar Director of clinical applications at the hospital for sick children each sharing their unique journeys and insights into overcoming challenges and making significant impacts in their fields. Cory Bryan, VP Corporate Services & CFO of Scarborough Health Network also delivered a compelling message. Representing the Scarborough Health Network, his insights underscored the critical role of community health and empowerment in building a stronger and more resilient society.

A significant highlight of the event was the announcement regarding the Made in Mullaitivu initiative moving into its second stage. This phase marks the opening of a showroom in Mullaitivu, a milestone that was eagerly shared with attendees. The Made in Mullaitivu showroom is more than just a step towards enhancing economic opportunities; it symbolizes the nurturing of a community environment where women can achieve financial independence and strength. This showroom is expected to be established in the coming months and will be located in the centre of the Mullaitivu town besides its new bus stand complex. CTC has committed to fund this showroom which will support large number of local producers, particularly women. Attendees at this CTC event enthusiastically purchased the Made in Mullaitivu sarees produced by women from the war affected Northern and Eastern provinces of Sri Lanka, which was to partially fund this new showroom in Mullaitivu.

The 2024 Canadian Tamil Congress Women in Leadership Award was presented to Mani Pathmarajah, in recognition of her outstanding contributions and leadership for the last 40 years. Mani Pathmarajah has made significant contribution to the formation of Senor Tamil Centre and towards the establishment of Tami Co-op building to assist the housing needs of Tamil refugees. This moment was a testament to the power of recognizing and celebrating female leaders who inspire change and progress. This award was introduced by Kumudhini Thavaraj and presented by Dr. Meera Selvakone.

The event also featured a Medical Panel Discussion moderated by Dr. Meera Selvakone with Dr. Gayathri Naganathan, Dr. Nishani Umasuthan, and Social Worker Fadiya Shaideen, who delved into various health and social issues, offering insightful perspectives and advice.

A fun and engaging raffle brought smiles and excitement, with attendees eagerly anticipating the draw. Prizes were distributed, adding a festive note to the gathering and fostering a sense of community and joy.
The event also provided an opportunity for networking, where attendees connected, shared stories, and built relationships. This segment of the event underscored the importance of community support and collaboration in driving forward the agenda for women’s empowerment.

A tribute was paid to late Mrs. Sathiyajothi Selvakone for her lifelong contribution to the Tamil community including her commitment to CTC projects.

As we reflect on this memorable celebration, the Canadian Tamil Congress remains dedicated to advocating for gender equality, supporting women’s leadership, and fostering an inclusive community where every woman’s contribution is valued and celebrated.

கனடிய தமிழர் பேரவையின் மகளிர் தின கொண்டாட்டங்கள் மார்ச் 24, 2024 அன்று இடம்பெற்றது. இந்நிகழ்வானது கனடாவில் உள்ள தமிழ் சமூகத்திற்குள்ளும் அதற்கு அப்பாலும் பெண்களின் குறிப்பிடத்தக்க சாதனைகள் மற்றும் பங்களிப்புகளைக் கொண்டாடும் வகையில் அமைந்திருந்தது.

பாரம்பரிய மங்கள விளக்கு ஏற்றுதல் கலாச்சார முக்கியத்துவத்துடன் ஆரம்பமான நிகழ்வு கனேடிய தேசிய கீதம் மற்றும் தமிழ் தாய் வாழ்த்து பாடுவதன் மூலம் நமது இரட்டை பாரம்பரியத்தையும் கலாச்சாரங்களின் இணக்கமான கலவையையும் பிரதிபலித்து தொடர்ந்தது.

அதிகாரமளித்தல் மற்றும் கொண்டாட்டத்தின் கருப்பொருளை எதிரொலிக்கும் வகையில், நமது சமூகத்தில் உள்ள பலதரப்பட்ட திறமைகளை வெளிப்படுத்தும் கலாச்சார நடனநிகழ்ச்சிகளும் ஏற்பாடுசெய்யப்பட்டிருந்தது.

CTCயின் தலைவர் ரவீனா ராஜசிங்கம், தனது உரையில் பாலின சமத்துவத்தை முன்னேற்றுவதற்கும் பல்வேறு துறைகளில் பெண்களின் தலைமையை ஆதரிப்பதற்கும் அமைப்பின் உறுதிப்பாட்டை வலியுறுத்தினார். வசந்தி அழகுசாதனப் பொருட்களின் நிறுவனர் பிங்கி கோசல் மற்றும் நோய்வாய்ப்பட்ட குழந்தைகளுக்கான மருத்துவமனையின் மருத்துவப் பயன்பாடுகளின் இயக்குநர் நிண்டு குமார் ஆகியோர் சிறப்பு விருந்தினர்களாக கலந்துகொண்டதோடு அவர்களின் வெற்றிக்கான பாதையைப்பற்றியும் வந்திருந்தவர்களிடம் பகிர்ந்துகொண்டார். கோரி பிரையன், VP கார்ப்பரேட் சர்வீசஸ் & ஸ்காபரோ ஹெல்த் நெட்வொர்க்கின் CFO ஸ்காபரோ ஹெல்த் நெட்வொர்க்கைப் பிரதிநிதித்துவப்படுத்தி வலுவான சமுதாயத்தை உருவாக்குவதில் சமூக ஆரோக்கியம் மற்றும் அதிகாரமளிப்பு ஆகியவற்றின் முக்கிய பங்கை அடிக்கோடிட்டுக் காட்டும்வகையில் ஒரு சிறப்புரையை வழங்கினார்.
மேட் இன் முல்லைத்தீவு முயற்சியானது அதன் இரண்டாம் கட்டத்திற்கு நகர்வது தொடர்பான அறிவிப்பானது நிகழ்வின் குறிப்பிடத்தக்க சிறப்பம்சமாகும். முல்லைத்தீவில் ஒரு காட்சியரை திறக்கப்படவுள்ள முயட்சிகள் தொடர்பில் பங்கேற்பாளர்களுடன் பகிர்ந்து கொள்ளப்பட்டது. மேட் இன் முல்லைத்தீவு காட்சியறையானது பொருளாதார வாய்ப்புகளை மேம்படுத்துவதற்கான ஒரு படி மட்டுமல்ல; பெண்கள் நிதி சுதந்திரத்தையும் வலிமையையும் அடையக்கூடிய சமூக சூழலை வளர்ப்பதாகவும் அமையும். இந்த காட்சியறை எதிர்வரும் மாதங்களில் ஸ்தாபிக்கப்படவுள்ளதுடன், முல்லைத்தீவு நகரின் மையப்பகுதியில் அதன் புதிய பஸ் நிலைய வளாகத்தில் அமையவுள்ளது. அதிக எண்ணிக்கையிலான உள்ளூர் உற்பத்தியாளர்களுக்கு, குறிப்பாக பெண்களுக்கு ஆதரவளிக்கும் இந்த காட்சியறைக்கு நிதியளிக்க CTC உறுதியளித்துள்ளது. கனடிய தமிழர் பேரவையின் இந்த முக்கிய முயற்சிக்கு ஆதரவளிக்கும் முகமாகவும், போரினால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட பெண்களின் தொழில் முயற்சிகளை ஊக்கப்படுத்தும் நோக்குடனும் இந்த நிகழ்வில் கலந்துகொண்ட பலர் புடவைகளை வாங்குவதன் மூலம் ஆதரவளித்திருந்தனர்.

2024 கனடிய தமிழர் பேரவை மகளிர் தலைமைத்துவ விருது கடந்த 40 ஆண்டுகளாக சிறந்த பங்களிப்பு மற்றும் தலைமைத்துவத்துடன் செயற்பட்ட மணிபத்மராஜாவை பாராட்டி வழங்கப்பட்டது. தமிழ் அகதிகளின் வீட்டுத் தேவைகளுக்கு உதவுவதற்காக செனோர் தமிழ் மையத்தை உருவாக்குவதற்கும், தமிழ் கூட்டுறவு கட்டிடத்தை நிறுவுவதற்கும் மணி பத்மராஜா குறிப்பிடத்தக்க பங்களிப்பைச் செய்துள்ளார். மாற்றத்தையும் முன்னேற்றத்தையும் ஊக்குவிக்கும் பெண் தலைவர்களை அங்கீகரித்து கொண்டாடும் சக்திக்கு இந்த தருணம் சான்றாக இருந்தது. இந்த விருதை குமுதினி தவராஜ் அறிமுகப்படுத்தி, டாக்டர் மீரா செல்வகோன் வழங்கினார்.

இந்நிகழ்வில், மருத்துவர் மீரா செல்வகோன் அவர்களால் நடத்தப்பட்ட மருத்துவக் குழு கலந்துரையாடல், டாக்டர் காயத்திரி நாகநாதன், டாக்டர் நிஷானி உமாசுதன் மற்றும் சமூக சேவகர் ஃபாடியா ஷைதீன் ஆகியோருடன் பல்வேறு உடல்நலம் மற்றும் சமூகப் பிரச்சினைகளை ஆராய்ந்து, நுண்ணறிவுமிக்க முன்னோக்குகளையும் ஆலோசனைகளையும் வழங்கியது.
இந்த நிகழ்வு தொடர்புகளை வளர்த்துக்கொள்வதற்கான வாய்ப்பையும் வழங்கிஇருந்தது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

இந்த நிகழ்வின்போது காலஞ்சென்ற திருமதி சத்தியஜோதி செல்வகோன் அவர்களின் வாழ்நாள் முழுவதும் தமிழ் சமூகத்திற்கு அவர் ஆற்றிய பங்களிப்புக்காக அஞ்சலி செலுத்தப்பட்டது.
பாலின சமத்துவத்திற்காக வாதிடுவதற்கும், பெண்களின் தலைமையை ஆதரிப்பதற்கும், ஒவ்வொரு பெண்ணின் பங்களிப்பும் மதிக்கப்படும் மற்றும் கொண்டாடப்படும் சமூகத்தை வளர்ப்பதற்கும் கனடிய தமிழர் பேரவை அர்ப்பணிப்புடன் செயற்படும் என்பதற்கு இந்த நிகழ்வும் ஒரு சான்றாக அமைந்திருந்தது.
