Launch of ‘Made in Mullaitivu’ Initiative to Support Local Producers

As part of the Canadian Tamil Congress’ (CTC) ongoing efforts to support local producers, the Made in Mullaitivu Local Producers’ Sales Centre was officially inaugurated on Monday, the 24th, near the new bus station in Mullaitivu.

Mullaitivu remains one of the most impoverished districts in Sri Lanka, having suffered the most during the civil war. Many small-scale local producers reside in this region, creating a diverse range of products. However, due to the lack of proper marketing opportunities, they have been unable to receive fair economic returns for their efforts. In response to requests from government officials and local producers, the Canadian Tamil Congress, in collaboration with the North and East Economic Development Centre (NEED Centre), has launched this initiative to support and uplift local businesses.

The Made in Mullaitivu initiative aims to enhance the quality of local production while also providing access to international markets. If successful, this initiative has the potential to establish a sustainable economic framework in the Northern and Eastern provinces. By strengthening market opportunities across Sri Lanka and globally, this project will equip local producers with better resources, business guidance, and expanded sales channels, ultimately fostering economic development in the region.

The event was attended by Mullaitivu District Government Officer, Mr. Umamaheswaran, Dean of the Faculty of Marketing at Vavuniya University, Mr. Nandakoban, Canadian Tamil Congress Executive Director, Danton Thurairajah, representatives from the Canadian Tamil Congress, and project donors. The guests were welcomed with floral garlands, followed by the lighting of the traditional oil lamp, a symbolic gesture of prosperity. The lamp was lit by local producers and entrepreneurs from across the Northern Province, including Jaffna, Vavuniya, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, and Mannar, alongside the project’s key supporters. Following this, Mr. Umamaheswaran, Mr. Nandakoban, and Mr. Danton Thurairajah officially opened the Made in Mullaitivu Local Producers’ Sales Centre.

Key Speeches

In his address, Mullaitivu District Government Officer, Mr. Umamaheswaran, drew a comparison between Mullaitivu and Japan, highlighting how Japan, despite facing devastation, rebuilt its economy into one of the strongest in the world. He expressed confidence that initiatives like Made in Mullaitivu could similarly pave the way for Mullaitivu’s economic growth.

Dean of the Faculty of Marketing at Vavuniya University, Mr. Nandakoban, emphasized the importance of first establishing a strong domestic market within Sri Lanka before expanding globally. He encouraged local producers to focus on building a solid national presence as a foundation for future international trade.

Both speakers expressed their gratitude to the Canadian Tamil Congress, NEED Centre, and Canadian donors for their commitment to supporting this project.

Thushy R. Thurairatnam, Humanitarian Project Coordinator for Sri Lanka at the Canadian Tamil Congress, stressed the importance of improving product quality and encouraging local consumers to support locally made goods. He also urged the Tamil diaspora to visit the centre when in Sri Lanka, purchase these products, and promote them internationally to help the initiative flourish.

Piradeeban Sothilingam, Director of the North and East Economic Development Centre, delivered the vote of thanks, acknowledging the unwavering support of government officials and key contributors who played a crucial role in making this project a reality.

Through this initiative, the livelihoods of people in war-affected areas will be improved, economic growth will be stimulated, employment opportunities will be created, and local industries will be strengthened. With the right resources, dedicated entrepreneurs, and skilled producers, this initiative will serve as a vital stepping stone in empowering the people of Mullaitivu and the broader Northern and Eastern regions.

கனடிய தமிழர் பேரவையின் செயற்திட்டங்களில் ஒன்றான உள்ளூர் உற்பத்தியாளர்களை ஊக்குவிக்கும் முயற்சியின் ஆரம்பக்கட்டமாக Made in Mullaitivu உள்ளூர் உற்பத்தியாளர் ஊக்குவிக்கும் நிலையம் 24 ஆம் திகதி திங்கட்கிழமை முல்லைத்தீவுமாவட்ட புதிய பேருந்து நிலையத்தின் அருகாமையில் திறந்துவைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

இலங்கையில் இடம்பெற்ற போரினால் அதிகமாக பாதிக்கப்பட்டதோடு இன்றுவரை மிக அதிகமான வறுமை நிலையில் முல்லைத்தீவு மாவட்டம் காணப்படுகின்றது. இப்பிரதேசத்தில் சிறு தொழில் செய்யும் உள்ளூர் உற்பத்தியாளர்கள் அதிகமாக வாழ்ந்து வருவதோடு பன்முகத்தன்மை வாய்ந்த பல உற்பத்திப்பொருட்களையும் தயாரித்து வருகின்றனர். ஆனாலும் சந்தைப்படுத்தல் வசதிகள் இல்லாததால் அவர்களின் உழைப்பிற்கும் உற்பத்திப்பொருட்களுக்குமான சரியான இலாபத்தை பெற்றுக்கொள்ள முடியாத நிலை காணப்படுகின்றது. முல்லைத்தீவு மாவட்டத்தின் அரசாங்க அதிபர்களினதும், உள்ளூர் உற்பத்தியாளர்களின் வேண்டுகோளின்படி கனடிய தமிழர் பேரவை உள்ளூர் உற்பத்தியாளர்களிற்கு உதவும் வகையில் இந்த செயற்திட்டத்தை ஆரம்பித்துவைத்துள்ளது.

Made in Mullaitivu (மேட் இன் முல்லைதீவு) செயற்திட்டம் மூலமாக உள்ளூர் உற்பத்திகளை ஊக்குவிப்பதோடு உற்பத்தியாளர்களுக்கு அகில இலங்கை ரீதியிலும் சர்வதேச சந்தையிலும் சந்தை வாய்ப்புக்களை பெற்றுக்கொடுக்க முடியும். இது வெற்றிபெறும் பட்சத்தில் நிலையான பொருளாதார கட்டமைப்பொன்றை வடக்கு கிழக்கில் உருவாக்க முடியும். தாயக உற்பத்தியாளர்களை ஊக்குவித்து வடக்கு கிழக்கில் உள்ள உற்பத்தியாளர்களிற்கு அவர்களது உற்பத்திகளை ஆதிகரிக்கவும், ஆலோசனைவழங்கவும், சந்தப்பரப்பை விரிவாக்கவும் இந்த செயற்திட்டம் உதவியாக அமையும்.

இந்த திறப்பு விழாவின் பிரதம விருந்தினர்களாக முல்லைத்தீவு மாவட்ட அரசாங்க அதிபர் திரு உமாமகேஸ்வரன் அவர்களும், வவவுனியா பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் சந்தைப்படுத்தல் பீடத்தின் பீடாதிபதி திரு. நந்தகோபன் அவர்களும், கனடிய தமிழர் பேரவையின் நிர்வாக இயக்குனர் திரு. டன்டன் துரைராஜா அவர்களும், கனடிய தமிழர் பேரவையின் பிரதிநிதிகள் மற்றும் இத்திட்ட நன்கொடையாளர்களும் கலந்துகொண்டிருந்தனர்.

இந்த நிகழ்வின் ஆரம்பத்தில் விருந்தினர்கள் மலர் மாலைகள் அணிவித்து இனிதே வரவேற்கப்பட்டனர். அதன் பின்னர்,மங்கள விளக்கேற்றல் நிகழ்வு நடைபெற்றது. இதன்போது யாழ்ப்பாணம், வவுனியா, கிளிநொச்சி, முல்லைத்தீவு, மற்றும் மன்னார் ஆகிய வட மாகாணத்தின் அனைத்து மாவட்டங்களையும் சேர்ந்த உள்ளூர் தயாரிப்பாளர்கள், தொழில்முனைவோர் மற்றும் இந்த திட்டத்தின் முக்கிய ஆதரவாளர்கள் இணைந்து மங்கள விளக்கினை ஏற்றிவைத்தனர். இதன்பின், திரு. உமாமகேஸ்வரன், திரு. நந்தகோபன், மற்றும் திரு. டாண்டன் துரைராஜா ஆகியோரால் அதிகாரப்பூர்வமாக Made in Mullaitivu உள்ளூர் தயாரிப்பாளர்கள் உள்ளூர் உற்பத்தியாளர் ஊக்குவிக்கும் நிலையம் திறந்துவைக்கப்பட்டது.

முல்லைத்தீவு மாவட்ட அரசாங்க அதிகாரி திரு உமாமகேஸ்வரன் அவர்கள் தனது உரையில் முல்லைத்தீவின் நிலைமையை ஜப்பானுடன் ஒப்பிட்டு பேசினார். யுத்தக் கொடூரத்திற்குப் பிறகும், உலகின் முன்னணி பொருளாதாரமாக ஜப்பான் உருவாகியதை அவர் எடுத்துக்காட்டாக முன்வைத்து, Made in Mullaitivu போன்ற முயற்சிகள் முல்லைத்தீவின் பொருளாதார வளர்ச்சிக்கு பாதை வகுக்க முடியும் என்று நம்பிக்கை தெரிவித்தார்.

வவுனியா பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் சந்தைப்படுத்தல் பீடத்தின் பீடாதிபதி திரு நந்தகோபன் அவர்கள், உலக சந்தைக்கு முன்னதாக இலங்கைக்குள் உள்ளூர் சந்தையை உறுதிப்படுத்துதல் முக்கியம் என்பதை வலியுறுத்தினார். முதலிலேயே உள்ளூர் சந்தையில் வலுவான நிலைப்பாடு உருவாக்கி பின்னர் உலகளாவிய வர்த்தகத்திற்கு முன்னேற வேண்டும் என்று உள்ளூர் தயாரிப்பாளர்களுக்கு அறிவுறுத்தினார்.

இருவரும் கனடிய தமிழர் பேரவை, NEED மையம், மற்றும் கனடிய நன்கொடையாளர்களுக்கு இந்த முயற்சியில் அவர்கள் வழங்கிய உறுதிப்பாட்டிற்காக தனது நன்றியை தெரிவித்தனர்.

கனடிய தமிழர் பேரவையின் இலங்கைக்கான மனிதாபிமான திட்ட ஒருங்கிணைப்பாளர் திரு துஷி ஆர். துரைரத்தினம், தயாரிப்புகளின் தரத்தை மேம்படுத்துவதின் அவசியத்தை வலியுறுத்தினார். மேலும், உள்ளூர் மக்கள் அவர்களின் பிரதேசத்தில் தயாரிக்கப்பட்ட பொருட்களை ஆதரிக்க வேண்டும் என்பதையும், வெளிநாட்டில் உள்ள தமிழ் மக்கள் இலங்கைக்கு வரும்போது இந்த மையத்தை நேரில் வந்துபார்வையிடுவதோடு இந்த உள்ளூர் உற்பத்திகளை ஆதரிக்க வேண்டும் என்றும் பொருட்களை வாங்கி வெளிநாடுகளில் பரப்ப வேண்டும் என்றும் கேட்டுக்கொண்டார்.

வடக்கு மற்றும் கிழக்கு பொருளாதார மேம்பாட்டு மையத்தின் பணிப்பாளர் திரு பிரதீபன் சோதிலிங்கம் தனது நன்றியுரை வழங்கியபோது, இந்த திட்டத்தை வெற்றிப்படுத்த முக்கிய பங்கு வகித்த அரசாங்க அதிகாரிகள் மற்றும் ஆதரவாளர்களுக்கு தனது மனமார்ந்த நன்றியை தெரிவித்தார்.

இத்திட்டத்தின் மூலம் தாயகமக்களின் வாழ்வாதாரத்தை உயர்த்தி, சிறந்த பொருளாதார வளர்ச்சியை உருவாக்கிக்கொடுப்பதோடு வேலைவாய்ப்புக்களை உருவாக்கவும், உள்ளூர் உற்பத்தியை மேலும் ஊக்குவிக்கவும் முடியும். அனைத்து வளங்களும், கடின உழைப்பாளிகளும், சிறந்த உற்பத்தியாளர்களும் உள்ள எம் பிரதேசங்களில் வாழும் மக்களிற்கு இந்தத்திட்டம் பல வகையிலும் உறுதுணையாக அமையும் என நாங்கள் நம்புகின்றோம்.
