May 18 Mullivaikal Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day 2024

May Mullivaikkal Memorial – 15 years on, still awaiting justice, still enduring oppression.

On May 18th 2024, the Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) solemnly observed the 15th Year Tamil Genocide & Mullivaikal Remembrance Day. This heart-wrenching event serves as a stark reminder of the horrific history where countless Tamils were brutally killed and forcibly disappeared while the international community remained silent. Despite the passage of 15 years, justice remains elusive.

The event began with a powerful moment of silence, honoring the victims of the Civil War. A compelling video depicting the systematic Tamil genocide in Sri Lanka was shown, laying bare the past atrocities and the ongoing struggles of the survivors in the war-ravaged Tamil areas. This was followed by an overview of the relentless efforts by CTC to support these survivors.

Dr. Shan A. Shanmukavadivel, Vice President of CTC, delivered a heartfelt speech, urging international bodies to intervene and stop the current oppressions faced by the Tamil community. He also called upon the Tamil community to support the survivor families who still need financial assistance to build a dignified life.
The event continued with the laying of flowers in remembrance, accompanied by a poignant song that resonated deeply with all present.

The second half of the remembrance focused on actionable steps to support the survivor families who still endure grave injustices and live in dire conditions. Key projects by CTC were highlighted:

Thennamaravadi Resettlement Project:

This critical project focuses on resettling families in a village that lies at the border of the Northern and Eastern provinces of Sri Lanka. Three initiatives were highlighted and they are; Creating a proper studying environment for the primary school in Thennamaravadi by renovating classrooms, teachers’ quarters, water tank and establishing a play area facility.

Palmyrah Development and Women Economic Empowerment Initiative by collaborating with the Thennamaravadi Women Rural Development Society (WRDS) and the North and East Economic Development (NEED) Centre focusing on palmyrah sprout production by utilizing existing palmyrah resources in the area. Helping a family of five permanently resettle in Thennamaravadi. This historic Tamil village once had a thriving population of approximately 500 families and the entire village was forced to flee in 1984. Only after the war ended in 2009, people were permitted to return to this village. Due to the very difficult and challenging conditions that exist in the Thennamaravadi village, only about 70 families have returned in the last 15 years. Lot more support is needed to improve the conditions in Thennamaravadi to successfully resettle people in this village and bring it back to its old glory.

Mullaitivu Handloom Factory & Showroom:

Mullaitivu was the worst war impacted district, particularly in the last stages of the war. Mullaitivu district along with Kilinochchi district have the highest poverty levels in Sri Lanka. The natural beauty and resources of Mullaitivu offer immense potential for sustainable development. With vast uncultivated lands and a resilient community of small-scale producers, CTC is committed to driving sustainable growth through two major projects: Empowering women through a new handloom weaving factory inaugurated in Puthukudiyiruppu on May 13th. Initially, ten women from the Puthukudiyiruppu area, who were economically affected by the war, will receive comprehensive training and employment at this weaving centre.

The “Made in Mullaitivu” Showroom Project aims to establish a local producer sales and information centre in the heart of Mullaitivu town. This centre will strengthen the capacity of both home-based and factory-based production, marketing local products nationally and globally at fair prices. By creating self-sustaining communities and improving local socio-economic conditions, the project supports the region’s economic growth, thereby securing livelihoods in the Mullaitivu district.

It is important to remember the past and to stand with those who survived difficult times.

மே 18 அன்று கனடியத் தமிழர் பேரவை (CTC) 15ஆம் ஆண்டு தமிழ் இனப்படுகொலை நினைவு தினத்தை அனுசரித்தது. எண்ணற்ற தமிழர்கள் கொடூரமாக கொல்லப்பட்டதோடு ஆயிரக்கணக்கான தமிழர்கள் வலிந்து காணாமல் ஆக்கப்பட்டனர். சர்வதேச சமூகம் இவை அனைத்தும் அரங்கேறும் போது மௌனமாக இருந்த கொடூரமான வரலாறு நிகழ்ந்து 15 ஆண்டுகள் கடந்தும், நீதி கிடைக்காமல் உள்ளது.

உள்நாட்டுப் போரில் கொல்லப்பட்டவர்களிற்கு மரியாதை செலுத்தும் வகையில், சில நிமிட மௌனத்துடன் நினைவேந்தல் நிகழ்வு ஆரம்பிக்கப்பட்டது. இதன்போது இலங்கையில் திட்டமிட்ட தமிழ் இனப்படுகொலையை சித்தரிக்கும் காணொளி ஒன்று காட்சிப்படுத்தப்பட்டது, கடந்தகால அட்டூழியங்கள் மற்றும் போரினால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட தமிழ் பகுதிகளில் எஞ்சியிருக்கும் தமிழர்களின் தொடர்ச்சியான போராட்டங்களை நினைவுபடுத்துவதாக இது அமைந்ததோடு உயிர் பிழைத்தவர்களுக்கு ஆதரவளிக்க CTC இன் இடைவிடாத முயற்சிகள் பற்றியும் காட்சிப்படுத்தப்பட்டது.

CTC இன் துணைத் தலைவர் டாக்டர் ஷான் சண்முகவடிவேல், தமிழ் சமூகம் எதிர்கொள்ளும் தற்போதைய அடக்குமுறைகளில் சர்வதேச அமைப்புகள் தலையிட்டு நிறுத்த வேண்டும் என்று வலியுறுத்தி உருக்கமான உரை நிகழ்த்தினார். கண்ணியமான வாழ்க்கையைக் கட்டியெழுப்ப நிதியுதவி தேவைப்படும் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட குடும்பங்களுக்கு தமிழ் சமூகம் ஆதரவளிக்க வேண்டும் என்றும் அவர் கேட்டுக் கொண்டார்.

நினைவேந்தலின் அடுத்த கட்டமாக மௌனிக்கப்பட்ட தமிழ் உறவுகளிற்காக மலரஞ்சலி செலுத்தப்பட்டதோடு அங்கிருந்த அனைவரையும் ஆழமாக எதிரொலிக்கும் ஒரு உணர்ச்சிமிக்க பாடலும் இசைக்கப்பட்டது.

இந்த நினைவேந்தல் நிகழ்வின் இரண்டாம் பாதியில், இன்றும் கடுமையான அநீதிகளைச் சகித்துக்கொண்டு இக்கட்டான சூழ்நிலையில் வாழும் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட குடும்பங்களிற்கு உதவுவதற்காக CTC இன் முக்கிய முயற்சிகள் முன்னிலைப்படுத்தப்பட்டன:

தென்னமரவாடி மீள்குடியேற்றத் திட்டம்:

இந்த முக்கியமான திட்டம் இலங்கையின் வடக்கு மற்றும் கிழக்கு மாகாணங்களின் எல்லையில் அமைந்துள்ள தென்னமரவடி கிராமத்தில் குடும்பங்களை மீள்குடியேற்றுவதில் கவனம் செலுத்துகிறது. இதன்போது மூன்று முன்முயற்சிகள் முன்னிலைப்படுத்தப்பட்டன. தென்னமரவாடியில் உள்ள தொடக்கப் பள்ளிக்கு வகுப்பறைகள், ஆசிரியர்கள் தங்கும் விடுதிகளை புதுப்பித்து கொடுத்தல், விளையாட்டு மைதானத்தை உருவாக்கிக் கொடுத்தல் என்பவற்றின் மூலம் சுமுகமான கற்றல் கற்பித்தலை நிலைநாட்டல். தென்னமரவடி மகளிர் கிராம அபிவிருத்திச் சங்கத்துடனும், வடக்கு கிழக்கு பொருளாதார அபிவிருத்தி மையத்துடனும் இணைந்து அப்பகுதியில் இருக்கும் பனை வளங்களைப் பயன்படுத்தி பனங்கிழங்கு உற்பத்தியில் கவனம் செலுத்துவதன் மூலம் பெண்களின் வாழ்வாதாரத்தை முன்னேற்றுதல். தென்னமரவடியில் ஐந்து பேர் கொண்ட குடும்பம் ஒன்றை நிரந்தரமாக மீள்குடியேற உதவுதல் என்பவையே அவையாகும். இந்த கிராமம் தமிழர்களுக்கு வரலாற்று ரீதியாகவும் புவியியல் ரீதியாகவும் முக்கியத்துவம் வாய்ந்தது, இந்த கிராமத்தை சிங்களமயமாக்கலில் இருந்து பாதுகாக்க வேண்டியது அவசியம் என்ற அடிப்படையில் இந்த செயற்திட்டம் முதன்மை பெறுகின்றது.

முல்லைத்தீவு கைத்தறி தொழிற்சாலை மற்றும் மேட் இன் முல்லைத்தீவு காட்சியறை நிறுவுதல்:
முல்லைத்தீவின் இயற்கை அழகும் வளங்களும் நிலையான அபிவிருத்திக்கான மகத்தான ஆற்றலை வழங்குகின்றன. பயிரிடப்படாத பரந்த நிலங்கள் மற்றும் சிறிய அளவிலான உற்பத்தியாளர்களின் எண்ணிக்கையிலும் அதிகமாக காணப்படும் தமிழ் பிரதேசங்களில் இதுவும் ஒன்று. CTC மே 13 அன்று புதுக்குடியிருப்பில் புதிய கைத்தறி நெசவுத் தொழிற்சாலை ஒன்றை திறந்து வைத்திருந்தது. அதன் மூலம் முல்லைத்தீவுப் பிரதேசத்தைச் சேர்ந்த போரினால் பொருளாதார ரீதியாக பாதிக்கப்பட்ட பத்துப் பெண்களுக்கு முதற்கட்டமாக இந்த நெசவு நிலையத்தில் விரிவான பயிற்சியும் வேலைவாய்ப்பும் வழங்கப்படவுள்ளது.
“மேட் இன் முல்லைத்தீவு” காட்சியறை திட்டம் முல்லைத்தீவின் மையப்பகுதியில் உள்ளுர் உற்பத்தியாளர் விற்பனை மற்றும் தகவல் மையத்தை நிறுவுவதை நோக்கமாகக் கொண்டுள்ளது. இந்த நிலையம் உள்நாட்டு உற்பத்தி மற்றும் தொழிற்சாலை அடிப்படையிலான உற்பத்தியின் திறனை வலுப்படுத்தும், தேசிய ரீதியிலும் சர்வதேச ரீதியிலும் உள்ளூர் தயாரிப்புகளை நியாயமான முறையில் சந்தைப்படுத்துவதன் மூலம் உள்ளூர் சமூக-பொருளாதார நிலைமைகளை மேம்படுத்துவதே இந்த திட்டத்தின் பிரதான நோக்கமாகும். இத்திட்டம் பிராந்தியத்தின் பொருளாதார வளர்ச்சியை மேம்படுத்தும் என்பதோடு இதன் மூலம் முல்லைத்தீவு பகுதியில் வாழ்வாதாரத்தை வளப்படுத்தவும் முடியும்.

கடந்த காலத்தை நினைவில் கொள்வதோடு, பாதிக்கப்பட்டு இன்றளவும் வாழ்வாதார சிக்கல்களை சந்தித்துவரும் தமிழ் உறவுகளுடன் நிற்பதும் முக்கியம்.
