Moringa Leaf Processing Centre Opened at Canada Batticaloa Friendship Farm

The Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) and the North and East Economic Development (NEED) Centre proudly celebrated a major milestone on February 27, 2025, with the inauguration of the Moringa Leaf Processing Facility in Sri Lanka, the second phase a value addition for the Canada-Batticaloa Friendship Farm Kail T. Rajah Project. This new facility is a crucial development in strengthening the agricultural economy of the Batticaloa region and moringa production.
The Canada-Batticaloa Friendship Farm – Kail T Rajah Project was first inaugurated in February 2024. Since its establishment, the farm has flourished, with over 2,000 moringa trees planted, creating employment opportunities, and boosting agricultural productivity. Recognizing moringa as a highly nutritious and commercially valuable crop, the second phase of the initiative was designed to process harvested moringa leaves into moringa powder, increasing economic benefits for local farmers.

The inauguration ceremony on February 27, 2025, began with a traditional Tamil welcome, where distinguished guests were honored with garlands. This was followed by the ceremonial lighting of the oil lamp, signifying prosperity, and new beginnings by all the guests, CTC representatives and donors. Mr. Danton Thurairajah, Executive Director of the Canadian Tamil Congress, Mrs. Mukundan, Senior Assistant Government Agent, Yogeswaran Mayilvaganam, Chair of the North East Economic Development (NEED) Centre and Saravanabhavan Thiagarajah, Former Mayor of Batticaloa and the Batticaloa District Parliamentarian Shanakiyan Rasamanickkam’s Assistant Vimalanathan Manimenan jointly cut the ribbon and opened the Moringa Processing Centre.

Following the inauguration, key speakers emphasized the significance of this initiative. Thushyanthan R. Thurairatnam, CTC’s Humanitarian Project Coordinator for Sri Lanka, highlighted CTC’s commitment to sustainable economic development and its direct impact on Tamil farmers’ livelihoods. Mrs. Mukundan, Senior Assistant Government Agent, reaffirmed government support for this initiative and how this is a great support for the locals, while Mr. Myilvaganam Yogeswaran, Director of the North East Economic Development Centre, stressed the importance of local processing for increased profitability. Mr. Thiyagarajah Saravanabhavan, Former Mayor of Batticaloa, spoke on the region’s agricultural heritage, and Vimalanathan Mathimenan, Secretary to Batticaloa District Member of Parliament; Shanakiyan Rasamanickam, praised the initiative’s role in strengthening the local economy.

Before the establishment of this facility, local farmers faced significant challenges in transporting fresh moringa leaves for processing or marketing due to logistical limitations. Now, with this processing facility located within Batticaloa, these barriers have been removed. The factory will enable farmers to process their harvest locally, increasing their earnings; create direct and indirect employment for local workers; support home growers by purchasing moringa leaves at fair market prices and create a global market.

To further support local farmers, moringa saplings were distributed to approximately 50 beneficiaries at the event. This initiative encourages families to cultivate moringa in their home gardens, integrating sustainable agricultural practices into their daily lives. Additionally, the farm has committed to purchasing moringa leaves from these growers ensuring long-term economic benefits for the community.

The Canadian Tamil Congress remains dedicated to investing in sustainable agricultural projects that uplift Tamil communities and ensure long-term economic stability. The inauguration of this Moringa Leaf Processing Facility marks a transformative step demonstrating the power of collaboration in creating lasting economic and social impact.

2024 பிப்ரவரியில் திறக்கப்பட்ட கனடா-மட்டக்களப்பு நட்புறவுப்பண்ணை – கைல் டி. ராஜா திட்டம் தற்போது கணிசமான வளர்ச்சி கண்டுள்ளது. இதுவரை 2,000-க்கும் மேற்பட்ட முருங்கை மரங்கள் பயிரிடப்பட்டுள்ளன. இதன் மூலம் முருங்கை உற்பத்தி உயர்ந்துள்ளதுடன், பலருக்கு வேலைவாய்ப்புகளும் உருவாகியுள்ளது. முருங்கை ஊட்டச்சத்து மிகுந்ததும் வர்த்தக ரீதியாக அதிக மதிப்புள்ளதுமான ஒரு பயிராக இருப்பதால், இந்த இரண்டாம் கட்டமாக முருங்கை இலையை பதனிடும் ஆலை அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இதன் மூலம் விவசாயிகள் அதிக பொருளாதார பலன்களை பெறுவதுடன் சர்வதேச சந்தைகயிலும் இவற்றிற்கு அதிக மதிப்பு இருப்பதாகவும் அமையும்.

2025 பிப்ரவரி 27 அன்று நடைபெற்ற இந்த புதிய பதனிடும் ஆலையின் திறப்பு விழா பாரம்பரிய தமிழ் வரவேற்புடன் நடைபெற்றிருந்தது. சிறப்பு விருந்தினர்களுக்கு மரியாதையாக மாலைகள் அணிவிக்கப்பட்டன. அதன் பின்னர் சிறப்பு விருந்தினர்களாலும், கனடிய தமிழர் பேரவையின் பிரதிநிதிகளால் மங்கள விளக்கேற்றலுடன் திறப்புவிழா ஆரம்பிக்கப்பட்ட்டது. விழாவின் முக்கிய நிகழ்வாக, CTC நிர்வாக இயக்குநர் டாண்டன் துரைராஜா, மூத்த உதவி அரசாங்க அதிபர் திருமதி முகுந்தன், NEED மையத் தலைவர் யோகேஸ்வரன் மயில்வாகனம், முன்னாள் மட்டக்களப்பு மேயர் சரவணபவன் தியாகராஜா மற்றும் மட்டக்களப்பு மாவட்ட நாடாளுமன்ற உறுப்பினர் சாணக்கியன் இராசமாணிக்கத்தின் உதவியாளர் விமலநாதன் மதிமேனன் ஆகியோர் இணைந்து முருங்கை பதனிடும் ஆலையை திறந்து வைத்தனர்.

திறப்பு விழையின் போது பல முக்கிய பேச்சாளர்கள் இந்த திட்டத்தின் முக்கியத்துவத்தை வலியுறுத்தினர். CTCயின் இலங்கைக்கான மனிதாபிமான திட்ட ஒருங்கிணைப்பாளர், துஷ்யந்தன் ஆர். துரைரத்தினம், CTC இந்த திட்டத்தின் மூலம் தமிழ் விவசாயிகளின் வாழ்க்கையை நேரடியாக முன்னேற்றும் முயற்சியில் ஈடுபட்டிருப்பதை எடுத்துக்காட்டினார். மூத்த உதவி அரசாங்க அதிபர் திருமதி முகுந்தன், இந்த திட்டம் மட்டுமல்ல, இதுபோன்ற முயற்சிகளை அரசாங்கம் தொடர்ந்து ஆதரிக்கப் போவதையும், இது உள்ளூர் மக்களுக்கு மிகுந்த பயன் தரும் என்றும் கூறினார். NEED மையத்தின் தலைவர், மயில்வாகனம் யோகேஸ்வரன், பதனிடும் செயல்முறைகள் உள்ளூரில் நடைபெறுவதன் மூலம் விவசாயிகள் அதிக லாபம் காண முடியும் என்றார். முன்னாள் மட்டக்களப்பு மேயர், தியாகராஜா சரவணபவன், இந்த பகுதியின் வேளாண்மை மரபை பற்றி பேசினார். மட்டக்களப்பு நாடாளுமன்ற உறுப்பினர் சாணக்கியன் இராசமாணிக்கத்தின் செயலாளர், விமலநாதன் மதிமேனன், இந்த திட்டம் உள்ளூர் பொருளாதாரத்தை வலுப்படுத்துவதில் முக்கிய பங்கு வகிக்கும் என பாராட்டினார்.

இந்த முருங்கை பதனிடும் ஆலையை நிறுவுவதற்கு முன்பு, விவசாயிகள் முருங்கை இலைகளை வேறு இடங்களில் பதனிட அனுப்புவதற்காக பல்வேறு சிக்கல்களை எதிர்கொண்டனர். இதனால் அவர்களின் விற்பனை பெரும்பாலும் மிகக் குறைவாகவே இருந்தது. ஆனால், இப்போது இந்த ஆலையால் விவசாயிகள் தங்கள் பயிர்களை உள்ளூரிலேயே பதனிட முடியும், இதனால் அவர்கள் அதிக வருமானம் பெறமுடியும். இதேசமயம், இந்த ஆலையால் பல நேரடி மற்றும் மறைமுக வேலைவாய்ப்புகளும் உருவாகும். இவை மட்டுமல்லாமல் வீட்டுத் தோட்டங்களில் முருங்கை வளர்க்கும் விவசாயிகளிடம் நியாயமான விலைக்கு முருங்கை இலைகளை வாங்கும் முயற்சிகள் ஆரம்பிக்கப்படும் என்பதோடு அவர்களின் வாழ்வாதாரத்தை மேம்படுத்துவதற்கான நிலையான வாய்ப்பாகவும் இது அமையும். முருங்கை தூள் தயாரிப்பு அதிகரிக்கப்படுவதன் மூலம், சர்வதேச சந்தையில் தமிழ் விவசாயிகள் தமது உற்பத்திகளை சந்தைப்படுத்துவதற்கான வாய்ப்புக்களும் அதிகரிக்கும்.

விவசாயிகளை மேலும் ஊக்குவிக்கும் வகையில், இந்த திறப்பு விழாவில் 50 பயனாளிகளுக்கு முருங்கை மரக்கன்றுகள் வழங்கப்பட்டன. இதன் மூலம் மக்கள் தங்கள் வீட்டுத் தோட்டங்களில் முருங்கை வளர்த்து, இதன் மூலம் நேரடி வருமானம் ஈட்டவும், உடல்நலத்திலும் பலன்களைப் பெறவும் முடியும். மேலும், கனடா மட்டக்களப்பு நட்புறவுப்பண்ணை நிர்வாகம் பயனாளிகளிடமிருந்து முருங்கை இலைகளை முறையான விலையில் வாங்கும் என்றும் உறுதிமொழி அளித்துள்ளது.

கனடிய தமிழர் பேரவை மற்றும் NEED மையம் தமிழ் சமூகத்தின் நிலையான பொருளாதார முன்னேற்றத்திற்காக தொடர்ந்து முதலீடு செய்ய உறுதிபூண்டுள்ளது. இந்த முருங்கை பதனிடும் ஆலையின் தொடக்கம், தமிழ் விவசாயிகளை மட்டுமல்லாமல், முழு சமூகத்தையும் முன்னேற்றப் பாதையில் கொண்டு செல்லும் ஒரு மாற்றத்திற்கான அடிப்படையாக அமையும். இது நீடித்த பொருளாதார மற்றும் சமூக மாற்றத்தை உருவாக்கக் கூடிய ஒரு முக்கிய முயற்சியாக பார்க்கப்படுகிறது.
