Remembering Black July: 40 Years of Resilience and Hope

An Extraordinary Commemoration at the Iconic Canadian Museum of Immigration Pier 21!

Halifax, July 13, 2023 – History came alive as we united to honor the survivors and victims of the pivotal “Black July” pogroms that shaped Sri Lanka’s destiny. Hosted by the esteemed Canadian Tamil Congress, this event was a powerful platform for reflection and remembrance. The Canadian Museum of Immigration Pier 21 provided a solemn backdrop, infusing the day with deep meaning and significance.

Emotions ran high as we listened to distinguished speakers share their insights and heartfelt sentiments. Marie Chapman, the visionary Executive Director of the Canadian Immigration Museum, reminded us of the immense importance of preserving immigrant stories. Sivan Ilangko, a revered Former President of the Canadian Tamil Congress, brought invaluable perspectives to the forefront.

On this historic occasion, attendees witnessed the symbolic relaunch of the Black July website. A digital sanctuary preserving the profound history of the 1983 genocide, the website now stands adorned with the courageous testimonies of survivors. Their indomitable spirits shine through, offering inspiration to generations present and yet to come.

Despite being unable to join us in person, The Honorable Sean Fraser, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, sent a poignant message that touched every heart present. His words resonated with us all, reinforcing our commitment to justice and unity.

The highlight of the day was the courageous account of survivor Juanita Nathan, who bravely shared her personal journey. Her story moved us deeply, serving as a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit. Community activist Sarujan Kanapathipillai engaged in a profound conversation, leaving us inspired and motivated to create positive change.

Harini Sivalingam, a brilliant lawyer and doctoral candidate, shed light on Canada’s compassionate response to the pogrom. Her insights highlighted the unwavering support provided to Tamil migrants, illuminating a path of hope and solidarity.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Gary Anandasangaree, Member of Parliament for Scarborough-Rouge Park, and all attendees, including the local Tamil community in Halifax, for joining us in this historic event. Your presence and support added strength to our collective mission of fostering a just and peaceful community.

கனடிய குடிவரவு அருங்காட்ச்சியகத்தில் கருப்பு ஜூலை நினைவேந்தல்.

ஹெலிபெஸ், ஜூலை 13, 2023 – இலங்கையின் தலைவிதியை மாற்றியமைத்த “கருப்பு ஜூலை” படுகொலைகளில் உயிர் இழந்த, பாதிக்கப்பட்ட அனைவரையும் நினைவுகூறுதலுக்கான நிகழ்வாக இது அமைந்திருந்தது. கனடிய தமிழர் பேரவையினால் ஒருங்கிணைக்கப்பட்ட இந்த நிகழ்வு சிந்தனைக்கும், நினைவூட்டலுக்கும் ஒரு தளமாக அமைந்தது. கனடிய குடிவரவு அருங்காட்சியகத்தில் இடம்பெற்ற இந்நிகழ்விற்க்கு அருங்காற்சியக பொறுப்பாளர்கள் பெரும் ஆதரவை வழங்கியது இந்த நிகழ்வை அர்த்தமுள்ளதாக மாற்றியது.

 

நிகழ்வில் உரையாற்றியவர்களின் அனுபவங்களும், அறிவும் கூடியிருந்தவர்களை உணர்வுபூர்வமாக மாற்றியது. கனடிய குடிவரவு அருங்கார்ச்சியகத்தின் தொலைநோக்கு செயல் இயக்குனர் மேரி பொப்மேன் புலம்பெயர்ந்து வந்தவர்களின் கதைகளைப் பாதுகாப்பதன் முக்கியத்துவத்தை அவைக்கு நினைவூட்டினார். கனடிய தமிழர் பேரவையின் முன்னாள் தலைவர் சிவன் இளங்கோ அவர்களும் தனது கருத்துக்களை மிக துல்லியமாக பலரும் சிந்திக்கும் வகையில் வெளிப்படுத்தினார்.

இந்த வரலாற்று சந்தர்ப்பத்தில் கருப்பு ஜூலை 83 இணையதளம் புத்துருவாக்கம் செய்யப்பட மறுதொடக்கம் செய்துவைக்கப்பட்டது. 1983 இனப்படுகொலையின் வரலாற்றை பாதுகாக்கும் டிஜிட்டல் ஊடகமாக இந்த இணையதளம் காணப்படும். இந்த கொடுமைகளில் பாதிக்கப்பட்டு மீண்டு வந்தவர்களின் அனுபவங்களும் ஆவணப்படுத்தப்பட்டிருப்பதால் தற்போதைய தலைமுறைக்கும், வருங்கால தலைமுறைக்கும் இறந்த காலத்தின் சாட்சியமாக இந்த இணையதளம் திகழும்.

நேரில் கலந்துகொள்ள முடியாவிடினும் கனடாவின் குடிவரவு, அகதிகள் மற்றும் குடியுரிமை அமைச்சர் மாண்புமிகு சீன் பிற்சேர் அவையில் இருந்த ஒவ்வொருவரும் நெகிழக்கூடிய உரையொன்ரை பகிர்ந்துகொண்டார். இவரது கருத்தாடல் நீதியையும் ஒற்றுமையையும் வலியுறுத்தும் வகையிலும் அமைந்திருந்தது.

அன்றைய சிறப்பம்சமாக, கருப்பு ஜூலையில் இருந்து பாதிக்கப்பட்டு மீண்டுவந்த ஜோனிட்டா நாதன், தனது தனிப்பட்ட அனுபவத்தை துணிச்சலாக பகிர்ந்துகொண்டார். அவரது அனுபவ பகிர்வு அவையில் இருந்தவர்களின் மனதின் ஆழத்தில் இருந்த நினைவுகளை தூண்டுவதாக இருந்தது. சமூக ஆர்வலர் சாருஜன் கணபதிப்பிள்ளையின் ஆக்கபூர்வமான கேள்விகளும் பங்களிப்பும் இந்த உரையாடலின் உண்மைத்தன்மையை உறுதிப்படுத்துவதாக இருந்தது.

சட்டத்தரணியும், முனைவர்ப்பட்டம் பெற்றவருமான ஹரினி சிவலிங்கம் நிகழ்ந்து முடிந்த படுகொலைகளிற்குபின் கனடாவின் உதவிகளையும், புலம்பெயர்ந்தவர்களிற்கு கனடா வழங்கிய ஆதரவையும், நம்பிக்கையையும் குறிப்பிட்டிருந்தார்.

இந்த வரலாற்று நிகழ்வில் எங்களுடன் இணைத்துக்கொண்ட Scarborough Rouge Park பாராளுமன்ற உறுப்பினர் கரி ஆனந்தசங்கரி மற்றும் Halifax இல் உள்ள உள்ளூர் தமிழ் சமூகம் உட்பட கலந்துகொண்ட அனைவருக்கும் கனடிய தமிழர் பேரவை சார்பாக மனமார்ந்த நன்றிகளை தெரிவித்துக்கொள்கின்றோம். அனைவரது ஆதரவுமே நீதியானதும் அமைதியானதுமான ஒரு சமூகத்தை வளர்ப்பதற்கான எங்கள் கூட்டுப்பணிக்கு வலுச்சேர்க்கிறது.
