Canadian Tamil Congress calls for immediate ceasefire in Gaza
The Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) joins worldwide calls for an immediate cessation of Israeli military action against Gaza and rocket attacks on Israel. CTC urges both parties to the conflict to practice the utmost restraint and take all necessary steps to avoid civilian casualties.
Reports indicate that more than 600 people, with a disproportionate number being civilians in Gaza, have been killed since war erupted in the region, and that people in Gaza are trapped in a small area facing constant bombardment and have nowhere to go. Doctors Without Borders (MSF) appealed in its release to stop the bombing of civilians trapped in Gaza and reported that medical workers were also coming under fire.
“Tamils faced a similar situation five years ago in the last stages of the war in Sri Lanka, where hospital and other civilian areas came under attack. At that time, our appeals to the UN and the international community were not heard, and more than 70,000 people died as a result of inaction,” said Danton Thurairajah, Executive Director, Canadian Tamil Congress. “We cannot stand still again while innocent lives are being lost daily.”
CTC urges the international community to exert pressure on both parties in a timely manner to bring about an immediate ceasefire.
