Strength in Unity

As the Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) reflects on the past months, we are reminded of the remarkable strength, unity, and resilience of our community. Despite facing protests, violence, abuse, harassment, and targeted misinformation campaign, CTC successfully hosted Tamil Fest 2024, bringing together thousands of attendees. This celebration of Tamil culture, demonstrated our unwavering commitment to uplifting and representing Tamils in Canada and around the world. CTC has always stood as a pillar of support for our community, working to protect its reputation of dignity, hard work, and high standards of living—values that we are determined to safeguard.

This statement outlines the key achievements of the past few months, the challenges we’ve overcome, and our future plans for growth, collaboration, and advocacy. At this crucial moment, we urge all members and supporters to unite with us in building a brighter, more inclusive future for generations to come.

Tamil Fest 2024: A Testament to Resilience

This year’s Tamil Fest 2024 was a powerful display of community strength. Despite organized protests, disruptive behavior, and attempts by third parties to intimidate our sponsors, performers, and volunteers, the event brought together tens of thousands of attendees over two days. Many families attended undeterred, even in the face of harassment and verbal abuse, including disgraceful attacks on women, elders, performers, artists and children. CTC unequivocally condemns such actions and stands firm in our belief that while differing opinions are a right, they must be expressed appropriately with respect. Any efforts to tarnish the hard-earned reputation of our community will not be tolerated.

CTC has taken necessary steps to address these incidents, including seeking legal advice and law enforcement support. As always, Tamil Fest remains a not-for-profit initiative, and all financials related to the event are independently audited. These records will be made available to members.

Countering Misinformation and Silence from Leadership

CTC is deeply aware of the misinformation campaign launched by boycott organizers, and we strongly urge our community to remain vigilant against false narratives. We reaffirm:

• CTC has never engaged with the Sri Lankan government on any proposals or negotiations.
• We continue to advocate for human rights, making a tangible impact through initiatives such as UNHCR resolutions and sanctions.
• CTC is proud to be involved in creating tangible effects on the ground in Sri Lanka through economic empowerment projects and humanitarian efforts.
• CTC has long acknowledged the Tamil Genocide and has supported related initiatives like the Tamil Genocide Memorial in Brampton. We have also archived critical events such as Black July 1983 and the burning of the Jaffna Library, maintaining dedicated websites for each ( blackjuly83.com , jaffnalibraryburning.com). These efforts contribute to preserving the historical record of the Tamil Genocide.

Equally disappointing has been the silence from our publicly elected representatives, both Tamil and non-Tamil, during this time of crisis. CTC calls on all members of the community, including elected officials, to unequivocally condemn the harassment, threats, intimidation, and violence that occurred during Tamil Fest. Silence in the face of these actions is not only unacceptable but sends a dangerous message that such behavior is tolerable.

We urge leaders and officials to speak out against these harmful actions. Failing to do so legitimizes unacceptable conduct and sets a harmful precedent for the future. It is imperative that we stand together, condemn these actions, and ensure that such incidents are not repeated. Silence is not an option.

Engagement and Community Consultation

CTC has consistently engaged with various organizations in good faith over the years and remains committed to collaborating with all willing partners. CTC is steadfast in its determination to foster unity and cohesion, working together for the collective benefit of the community.

Looking ahead, we have launched a community consultation initiative to gather input from the Tamil diaspora in Canada. This initiative will focus on governance, community representation, social and economic development, and the preservation of Tamil language, arts, and culture. Running until December, this effort will shape a five-year strategic plan for CTC, guided by input from community members, academics, and experts.

CTC’s mission remains as resolute as ever. Our journey is one of resilience, determination, and unwavering commitment to justice and equality. We will continue to listen, engage, and act in the best interests of our community, even when met with opposing viewpoints. கனேடிய தமிழர் பேர்வையின் (CTC) கடந்த மாதங்களை பிரதிபலிக்கும் போது, எமது சமூகத்தின் குறிப்பிடத்தக்க பலம், ஒற்றுமை என்பன எமக்கு நினைவுக்கு வருகின்றது. எதிர்ப்புகள், வன்முறை, துஷ்பிரயோகம், துன்புறுத்தல் மற்றும் இலக்கு வைக்கப்பட்ட தவறான தகவல் பிரச்சாரங்களை எதிர்கொண்ட போதிலும், ஆயிரக்கணக்கான பங்கேற்பாளர்களை ஒன்றிணைத்து 2024ஆம் ஆண்டு தமிழர் தெருவிழாவை வெற்றிகரமாக நடத்தியிருந்தோம். சவால்களுக்கு மத்தியில் நடைபெற்ற இந்த தமிழ் கலாச்சார கொண்டாட்டம், கனடாவிலும் உலகெங்கிலும் உள்ள தமிழர்களை உயர்த்துவதற்கும் பிரதிநிதித்துவப்படுத்துவதற்கும் எங்களின் அசைக்க முடியாத அர்ப்பணிப்பை வெளிப்படுத்தி வருகிறது. CTC எப்பொழுதும் எங்கள் சமூகத்திற்கு ஆதரவின் தூணாக இருந்து வருகிறது. கனடிய மண்ணில் வாழும் தமிழர்களின் கண்ணியம், கடின உழைப்பு மற்றும் உயர்ந்த வாழ்க்கைத் தரங்களின் நற்பெயரைப் பாதுகாக்க நாங்கள் உழைத்துவருவதோடு அவற்றை பாதுகாப்பதிலும் கவனம் செலுத்திவருகின்றோம்.

தமிழர் தெருவிழா 2024

இந்த ஆண்டு தமிழர் தெருவிழா சமூக பலத்தின் சக்திவாய்ந்த காட்சியாக அமைந்திருந்தது. ஒழுங்கமைக்கப்பட்ட எதிர்ப்புகள், சீர்குலைக்கும் நடத்தைகள், தமிழர் தெருவிழாவின் அனுசரணையாளர்கள், கலைஞர்கள் மற்றும் தன்னார்வலர்களை அச்சுறுத்தும் மூன்றாம் தரப்பினரின் முயற்சிகள் இருந்தபோதிலும், இரண்டு நாட்களில் பல்லாயிரக்கணக்கான பங்கேற்பாளர்களை இந்த நிகழ்வு ஒன்றிணைத்தது. பெண்கள், முதியவர்கள், கலைஞர்கள், மற்றும் குழந்தைகள் மீதான தனி நபர் தாக்குதல்கள் உட்பட, துன்புறுத்தல் மற்றும் வாய்மொழி துஷ்பிரயோகங்களுக்கு மத்தியிலும் பல குடும்பங்கள் கலந்துகொண்டன. சட்ட ஆலோசனை மற்றும் சட்ட அமலாக்க துறையினரின் ஆதரவைப் பெறுவது உட்பட, இந்த சம்பவங்களைத் தீர்க்க CTC தேவையான நடவடிக்கைகளை எடுத்துள்ளது. எப்பொழுதும் போல், தமிழர் தெருவிழா ஒரு இலாப நோக்கற்ற முயற்சியாகவே அமைந்து வருகிறது. மேலும் இந்த நிகழ்வு தொடர்பான அனைத்து நிதிகளும் சுயாதீனமாக தணிக்கை செய்யப்படுகின்றன. இந்த கணக்கு பதிவுகள் உறுப்பினர்களுக்கு கிடைக்கப்பெறுவதை நாங்கள் உறுதிசெய்வோம் என்பதையும் தெரிவித்துக்கொள்கின்றோம்.

தலைமைத்துவத்திலிருந்து தவறான தகவல் மற்றும் மௌனத்தை எதிர்த்தல்

புறக்கணிப்பு அமைப்பாளர்களால் தொடங்கப்பட்ட தவறான தகவல் பிரச்சாரத்தை CTC நன்கு அறிந்திருக்கிறது, மேலும் தவறான கதைகளுக்கு எதிராக விழிப்புடன் இருக்குமாறு எங்கள் சமூகத்தை நாங்கள் வலியுறுத்துகிறோம். கனடிய தமிழர் பேரவை பின்வருவனவற்றை மீண்டும் மிக தெளிவாக உறுதிப்படுத்துகின்றது;

1. CTC இலங்கை அரசாங்கத்துடன் எந்தவொரு முன்மொழிவுகளிலும் அல்லது பேச்சுவார்த்தைகளிலும் ஈடுபடவில்லை.
2. UNHCR தீர்மானங்கள் மற்றும் தடைகள் போன்ற முன்முயற்சிகள் மூலம் உறுதியான தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்துவதன் மூலம் மனித உரிமைகளுக்காக நாங்கள் தொடர்ந்து வாதிடுகிறோம்.
3. பொருளாதார வலுவூட்டல் திட்டங்கள் மற்றும் மனிதாபிமான முயற்சிகள் மூலம் இலங்கையில் உறுதியான விளைவுகளை ஏற்படுத்துவதில் CTC ஈடுபட்டுள்ளதில் பெருமிதம் கொள்கிறது.
4. CTC நீண்டகாலமாக தமிழ் இனப்படுகொலையை அங்கீகரித்து வருகிறது என்பதோடு பிராம்ப்டனில் தமிழ் இனப்படுகொலை நினைவகம் தொடர்புடைய முயற்சிகளை ஆதரித்துள்ளது. கறுப்பு ஜூலை 1983 மற்றும் யாழ் நூலகம் எரிப்பு போன்ற தமிழர்களின் இன அழிப்பிற்கான ஆரம்ப நிகழ்வுகளையும் இணையத்தளத்தில் பதிவு செய்துள்ளோம்.

இந்த நெருக்கடியான நேரத்தில் தமிழர் தெருவிழாவில் இடம்பெற்ற குற்ற சம்பவங்களிற்கு தமிழ் மற்றும் தமிழரல்லாத நமது பிரதிநிதிகள் பகிரங்கமாக கண்டனம் தெருவில வேண்டும். தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டவர்களிடமிருந்து வரும் மௌனம் ஏமாற்றத்தை அளிக்கிறது. தமிழ் தெருவிழாவின் போது இடம்பெற்ற துன்புறுத்தல்கள், அச்சுறுத்தல்கள், மற்றும் வன்முறைகளை சந்தேகத்திற்கு இடமின்றி கண்டிக்குமாறு மக்கள் பொரதினிதிகள் உட்பட அனைத்து சமூக உறுப்பினர்களுக்கும் CTC அழைப்பு விடுக்கிறது. இந்தச் செயல்களிற்கு அமைதியாக இருப்பது ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள முடியாதது மட்டுமல்ல, அத்தகைய நடத்தை சகிக்கத்தக்கது என்ற ஆபத்தான செய்தியை அனைவரது மெளனமும் உருவாக்கும் நிலை ஏற்படும்.

இந்தத் தீங்கு விளைவிக்கும் செயல்களுக்கு எதிராக குரல் கொடுக்குமாறு தலைவர்களையும் அதிகாரிகளையும் கேட்டுக்கொள்கிறோம். அவ்வாறு செய்யத் தவறுவது ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள முடியாத நடத்தையை சட்டப்பூர்வமாக்குகிறது என்பதோடு எதிர்காலத்திற்கு தீங்கு விளைவிக்கும் முன்னுதாரணத்தை ஏற்படுத்துவதாகவும் அமையும். நாம் ஒன்றுபட்டு, இந்தச் செயல்களைக் கண்டித்து, இது போன்ற சம்பவங்கள் மீண்டும் நடைபெறாமல் பார்த்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டியது அவசியம். மௌனம் என்பது ஒரு தேர்வாக இந்த தருணத்தில் இருக்க முடியாது.

CTC பல ஆண்டுகளாக நல்ல நம்பிக்கையுடன் பல்வேறு நிறுவனங்களுடன் ஈடுபட்டு வருகின்றது என்பதோடு அனைத்து விருப்பமுள்ள கூட்டாளர்களுடனும் தொடர்து இணைந்து செயற்படவும் ஆவலாக உள்ளது . சமூகத்தின் கூட்டு நலனுக்காக ஒன்றிணைந்து செயல்படவும் அனைத்து சமூக செயற்பாட்டாளர்களுடன் ஒற்றுமையை வளர்க்கவும் CTC உறுதியாக உள்ளது.

முன்னோக்கிப் பார்க்கையில், கனடாவில் உள்ள புலம்பெயர்ந்த தமிழர்களிடமிருந்து உள்ளீடுகளைச் சேகரிக்க சமூக ஆலோசனை முயற்சியை நாங்கள் தொடங்கியுள்ளோம். இம்முயற்சியானது ஆளுகை, சமூகப் பிரதிநிதித்துவம், சமூக மற்றும் பொருளாதார மேம்பாடு மற்றும் தமிழ் மொழி, கலைகள் மற்றும் கலாச்சாரத்தைப் பாதுகாப்பதில் கவனம் செலுத்தும். டிசம்பர் வரை இயங்கும் இந்த முயற்சியானது சமூக உறுப்பினர்கள், கல்வியாளர்கள் மற்றும் நிபுணர்களின் உள்ளீட்டின் மூலம் CTCக்கான ஐந்தாண்டு மூலோபாயத் திட்டத்தை வடிவமைக்கும்.
