Tamil Canadians Condolence Message to Families of Victims of Sri Lankan Landslide
On behalf of Tamil Canadians, the Canadian Tamil Congress conveys its sincere Meeriyabedda tea plantation. The number of people condolences to the families of the victims of the devastating mudslide that hit the missing from the incident continues to increase and some estimates now put it above 300. Many children have been orphaned as they were in school when their home was destroyed, and many hundreds have been rendered homeless.
Tea plantation workers in Sri Lanka are mostly Tamils and have been neglected from the time of Sri Lanka’s independence from Britain. Successive Sri Lankan governments have treated Tamil Tea plantation workers as second class citizens, not even ensuring their basic needs including proper and safe housing. Many houses of tea plantation workers, called line homes, were built centuries ago by the British who established tea plantations in Sri Lanka. Tea plantation workers are also the lowest paid in Sri Lanka.
Canadian Tamil Medical Association (CTMA) has announced it is collecting donations to help families impacted by the landslides. We urge Tamil Canadians to make timely donations to help the victims through CTMA’s disaster relief fund or any other agency that is directly involved in these relief efforts.
