Tamil Canadians raise $30,000 for Heart and Stroke Foundation
On September 14th, 2014, the Canadian Tamil Congress organized their 6th annual walk-a-thon from Thomson Memorial Park in Scarborough. This year’s beneficiary for Tamil Canadian Walk is Heart and Stroke Foundation. With the support of walkers and other well wishers, Tamil Canadian Walk was able to raise more than $30,000 up to now and hopes to reach the target of $50,000 by the end of this year’s campaign, which will close on December 31, 2014. The Tamil Canadian Walk has collected close to $300,000 in the last six years.
“Giving back to our community is an integral part of our values at Canadian Tamils Congress” said Christeen Seevaratnam co-chair of the walk-a-thon.
The Heart and Stroke Foundation is one of Canada’s largest and most effective health charities. Over the last 60 years the Foundation invested more than $1.39 billion in heart and stroke research through the generous donations of millions of Canadians. In that time, the death rate from heart disease and stroke has declined by more than 75 per cent.
It is a fact that every seven minutes someone in Canada dies from heart disease and stroke. As well, that due to genetic and other high-risk factors, South Asians are three times more likely to experience heart disease or stroke and at a much earlier age than other Canadians.
In attendance at the walk-a-thon were elected officials, community organizations, volunteers, community leaders, business associates and supporters. Hon. Mitzi Hunter, Ontario Associate Minister for Finance and Soo Wong MPP for Scarborough-Agincourt brought greetings from Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne. Rathika Sitsabaiesan MP for Scarborough-Rouge River brought the greetings from Tom Mulcair, Leader of the Official Opposition. Hon. John McKay MP for Scarborough-Guildwood and Gary Anandasangaree Liberal nomination candidate for Scarborough-Rouge Park brought greetings from Federal Liberal Party leader Justin Trudeau.
