Tamil Canadians welcome Canadian Government statement on Sri Lanka today.
Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) thanks the Canadian government for its statement today expressing concern over the Sri Lankan government’s recent proscription of many Tamil diaspora organizations, including the Canadian Tamil Congress. Today’s statement by Foreign Minister John Baird and Minister of State Lynne Yelich also clearly states these actions by the Sri Lankan government has no legal effect in Canada, giving assurance to all law abiding citizens of Canada that lawfully expressed views cannot be suppressed by intimidation and harassment. The CTC particularly agrees with the statement, “Diaspora communities play an important role in Sri Lanka’s post-conflict reconciliation process. This action by the Sri Lankan government could further hinder progress on reconciliation. While we may share concerns about some of those listed, we remind the Government of Sri Lanka that it must ensure any measure taken to combat terrorism complies with its obligations under international law, in particular international human rights law.”
Earlier this month Foreign Minister John Baird announced Canada is suspending its voluntary contribution of $20 million to the Commonwealth Secretariat for the period during which the Commonwealth is to be headed by Sri Lanka.
Last month, United Nations Human Rights Council Resolution 25/1 mandated the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to conduct an independent investigation into, “serious violations and abuses of human rights and related crimes by both parties in Sri Lanka,” which was seen internationally as a victory for human rights in Sri Lanka.
“The work that CTC does in regard to Sri Lanka has always been and continues to be focused on improving the human rights situation, in conformity and with respect for international law,” stated David Poopalapillai, national spokesperson for the Canadian Tamil Congress. “This is a cynical attempt to silence that work. Sri Lanka cannot continue to vilify human rights defenders by resorting to accusations of ‘terrorism’. It is unfortunate, that the government of Sri Lanka is unable to concentrate on seeking justice and accountability, resorting instead to such low tactics and fear mongering” concluded Poopalapillai.
