The Canadian Tamil Congress participates alongside Curve Lake First Nations, commemorating National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
The Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) requests the Tamil Canadians to join in observing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, honouring lost children and Survivors of residential schools, their families and communities. September 30th is a day for solemn reflection of the systemic oppression, inequalities, and discrimination that Indigenous Peoples have endured and the pain and injustices they continue to bear today.
In 2021, at the 13th Annual Tamil Canadian Walk, CTC supported the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund (DWF). DWF encourages the journey toward reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, providing access to education on the true history of Indigenous Peoples and the true history and ongoing impact of residential schools. To mark the inaugural National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, representatives from CTC visited the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory.
Last year, Bob Watts, former interim Executive Director of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation committee visited the CTC office on September 30the 2022, and addressed Tamil Canadian community members about the issues still affecting the indigenous community. Being part of the commission, which examined and made recommendations regarding the Indian Residential School era, he has played and continues to play on issues affecting the indigenous people.
This year (2023), in observance of this significant day, the Canadian Tamil Congress is honored to announce its participation alongside the Curve Lake First Nations on September 30th at 10:30 a.m. This collaborative event is dedicated to honoring the survivors of residential schools and paying tribute to those who never had the opportunity to return home.
The Canadian Tamil Congress strongly urges community members of all ages to join-in on this meaningful gathering. The event will feature powerful stories, a thoughtful walking tour, and will conclude with a communal lunch. It’s an opportunity for all to come together, reflect, and show solidarity in our commitment to truth, reconciliation, and remembrance.

The CTC is exploring the possibility of organizing a bus for this visit to the Curve Lake First to Nations. The round-trip cost per person is $35 for the bus and we need 40 or more people to commit for the bus to confirm bus transport.
