The Canadian Tamil Congress urges discussions guided by civility and mutual respect.
November 29, 2021 – On Saturday, November 20th, 2021, a handful of protesters conducting themselves in a disorderly manner disrupted a meeting in Scarborough, organized by Canada Tamil National Alliance, where democratically elected Members of Parliament from Sri Lanka, M.A. Sumanthiran and Shanakiyan Rasamanickam, were addressing attendees.
The Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) respects an individual’s right to protest and voice their opinion. However, CTC strongly condemns the aggressive and threatening behaviour of these protestors and believes their actions undermine the freedom of expression and peaceful assembly guaranteed by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom.
As an organization that values and advocates for freedom of expression, CTC recognizes the differing opinions in the community as it relates to the Tamil struggle and possible solutions resolving the same. While, CTC welcomes constructive discussions guided by civility and mutual respect, intimidation, threats and verbal abuse should not be tolerated under any circumstances. Furthermore, such behaviour negatively affects the community and the plight of Tamils, further alienating community members from engaging in essential issues.
CTC reiterates its support and respect for an individual’s right to protest, peacefully gather and express their own views but encourages such expression to remain respectful and shall not be aggressive, intimidating or violent.
